A fine performance at the Qatar Open where he beat Russia’s Viacheslav Burov, Aleksandr Kuchuk of Belarus and Austria’s Chen Weixing has been rewarded.
Killerspin’s Sharath Kamal Achanta is listed at no.55 on the Men’s World Ranking list issued by the International Table Tennis Federation on Wednesday 31st March 2010.
It is a career high for the powerful tall Indian star, who on the previous listings appeared at no.70.
The progress made by Sharath Kamal Achanta is a lesson for those who believe you have to be a superstar in teenage years.
Arrival
Sharath Kamal Achanta never enjoyed a glittering junior career; he first appeared on the ITTF Men’s World Ranking list in April 2003 when 21 years old and it was not until the following year that he announced his arrival.
En route to winning the Men’s Singles title at the Commonwealth Championships in the Malaysian capital city he beat England’s Alan Cooke, the winner of the title in the Welsh city of Cardiff in 1989.
Following his defeat, Alan Cooke remarked that if Sharath Kamal Achanta continued to execute forehand top spins as he had done against in their quarter-final meeting, he would progress to win the title.
Sharath Kamal Achanta duly obliged!
Unique
Furthermore, the following year in Melbourne he won the Men’s Singles title at the Commonwealth Games and in so doing became the only player ever to hold both the Commonwealth Championships and Commonwealth Games Men’s Singles titles.
In March 2007, he gained a place in the top 100 of the ITTF Men’s World Rankings being listed at no.86 and in August 2009 climbed to no.66, his previous best.
Now that position has been superseded, the Killerspin star is at no.55, a top 50 place is the next goal.
